Welcome

Welcome to the official website of the Gamma Iota Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated. This is an exciting time as we, the “Brooklyn-Long Island Alphas”, are in our 67th year of service to the Brooklyn and Long Island communities. We welcome you to come out and join us for our public social and service programs. Our chapter, like all of Alpha Phi Alpha, is dedicated to developing leaders, promoting brotherhood and academic success while providing service and advocacy for our community.

Service and goodwill are noticeable throughout our annual programs. We began the year with a Step Out: Walk to Stop Diabetes in partnership with local members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., where we raised $600 in efforts to change the face of Diabetes. Also, through our Community Service and Brother Keeper’s Chair have provided ongoing services to the Far Rockaway community after the superstorm Sandy. This fall we plan on hosting 100 Years Later: Where Are We Now?: PART II which will provide a further discussion of the place and role of Black Greeks in the 21st Century. Gamma Iota Lambda has also taken strides to assist, provide, and enable our senior brothers via our fraternity’s national Brother’s Keeper Program.

Looking forward to the Spring and Summer of 2013, Gamma Iota Lambda will continue to provide voter education as part of our national Voteless People Is A Hopeless People program. In concomitant with national program, Gamma Iota Lambda has partnered with Boys and Girls High with our Go-To-High School, Go-To-College initiative, where we provide mentorship, guidance, career development, college preparedness, and SAT tutoring through a strict curriculum. As always, the chapter will partner with Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. for our annual Family Health Day and continue to promote healthy lifestyles for our youth. However, our Health & Wellness committee has established a partnership with the New York City Department of Health in Keeping Your Community Heart Healthy: Free Blood Pressure Monitoring. Our trained Lay Health Workers will accurately take blood pressure reading, explain the reading, and offer brief counseling on behavior modifications. This service will be provided at no cost to the community of Bedford Stuyvesant.

Please look out for our social events which serve as fundraisers for our community service and scholarship program. This year we will continue to host successful mixers and fundraisers in community venues, including our annual Brotherhood Smokes, Social, The Alpha Affair, Day At The Races, and Juneteenth fundraiser. Brothers of Gamma Iota Lambda always show their guests a great time and would appreciate your participation at our next event. We look forward to building a better bond with you.

Best Regards,
